Dean Tomáš Karásek, Prof. Ivo Šlosarčík and Dr. Jan Hornát took part in a Discussion on Navigating Democracies in Central Europe at CzechHub, Taipei

On November 24th, 2025, Dean Tomáš Karásek, Prof. Ivo Šlosarčík and Dr. Jan Hornát took part in a debate on the topic of “Navigating Democracies: Central European Insights,” which took place at the CzechHub in Taipei. The event was moderated by Prof. Yeh-Chung Lu, Dean of College of International Affairs at the NCCU.

Dr. Karásek, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences at CUNI, briefly talked about the history of the CUNI’s Faculty of Social Sciences and its establishment in the world of democracy. He posed the question what democracy means in times of crisis.

Prof. Šlosarčík highlighted the political situation in the Czech Republic from constitutional perspective, while also contrasting it with the current global events. He concluded with a question of future prospects of the Czech court’s intervention within the new government.

Dr. Hornát discussed the topic of U.S.-EU relations as one of the tools to promote democracy. Additonally, he highlighted the trend of gradual import of U.S. culture wars into Europe in connection with the Trump administration and its possible threat not only to the U.S. society, but possibly to Central Europe.

Overall, the event was successful, fostering an interesting debate around the topic of navigating democracies, while also strenghtening the Czech-Taiwanese relations.
