One of our researchers Dr. Ondřej Svoboda (Faculty of Law, Charles University) has published an article for Euro Prospects journal titled “Beyond Fabs: The Czech Republic’s Supply-Chain Role in Europe’s Chip Race.” The article examines how the European Chips Act aims to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem, increase the EU’s global market share to 20 % by 2030, and highlights both opportunities and challenges for mid-sized, technologically advanced countries like the Czech Republic. Dr. Svoboda emphasizes that while the Czech Republic is not a leader in chip manufacturing, it plays a crucial role in the European semiconductor supply chain. The Czech Republic has strengthened its research ecosystem through the Czech Semiconductor Center, which connects universities, startups, and companies with EU pilot lines and design platforms. At the EU level, Czechia is advocating for semiconductor policies that focus on supply-chain strengths, global partnerships, and equitable support for mid-sized member states. Dr. Svoboda argues that these efforts, along with the upcoming Chips Act 2.0, demonstrate that technologically advanced, mid-sized countries can play a pivotal role in shaping Europe’s semiconductor future.
