Dr. Adrian Jan Zasina from the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, has published a new research paper in the Academic Journal of Modern Philology (University of Wrocław). The study explores how Taiwan was represented in Czech online media discourse between 2017 and 2020, using a corpus-based approach to discourse analysis. Drawing on data from the ONLINE1 corpus, which includes news outlets, social media, and online discussions, the paper analyses the collocational patterns of the terms Tchaj-wan (“Taiwan”) and tchajwanský (“Taiwanese”). The findings show that Taiwan is most often discussed in political and geopolitical contexts, such as international relations and official visits, while the adjective “Taiwanese” is primarily linked to business and technology, reflecting Taiwan’s role in economic cooperation. Across different media types, Taiwan is portrayed as both a democratic political partner and a technological ally. Overall, the paper reveals a predominantly positive image of Taiwan in Czech online media, corresponding with the strengthening of Czech–Taiwanese relations during the analysed period.
