Kick Off Organization and Academic Meeting

24.09.2024

Tuesday, September 24th, a meeting of representatives from four faculties took place at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, as part of the newly established Supply Chain Resilience Center (SCRC) project. The SCRC is a collaborative initiative between Charles University and National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taipei, Taiwan.

The meeting was opened by David Emler, the project director from the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV UK), who welcomed all coordinators and managers. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the faculties and the Taiwanese partner. Dr. Emler also presented the basic structure of the SCRC project, covering administrative and organizational details such as the project logo, website, planned promotional activities, and the key personnel involved.

The primary focus of the meeting was on global value chains (GVCs) and global production networks (GPNs), both crucial to the resilience of supply chains in the semiconductor industry. This topic was addressed by Prof. Jiří Blažek and Associate Professor Viktor Květoň from the Faculty of Science, whose research centers on analyzing production networks across various industries.

Following a short break, the afternoon session featured a presentation on the semiconductor sector and its strategic importance to both the global and local economies. In his lecture, Prof. Blažek stressed that semiconductors are a key segment driving industrial development not only in Europe but worldwide. The Taiwanese side highlighted the need for stable and resilient supply chains, which is also a core focus of the SCRC project.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on potential future research directions for the SCRC. Participants also touched on the sustainability of chip production and its environmental impact.

The SCRC project is emerging as a vital platform for both scientific research and practical applications, with the potential to support the growth of the semiconductor industry in the Czech Republic and across Central Europe. Charles University and its partners are dedicated to investigating and promoting resilient supply chains, thereby contributing to the stability of this critical sector.
